From the youth squads – Joan Herp Morell

22 April 2016

The 2016 Rio Olympics will have the participation of Joan Herp Morell, a 22 year old sailor, from the youth squad of Club Nàutic Costa Brava-Club de Vela Palamós. He will sail in Rio together with Jordi Xammar in the 470 men class.

Des de la pedrera - Joan Herp

In the summer of 2003, when he was nine, his grandfather signed him up for an Optimist sailing course at Club de Vela Palamós. The following year he joined the Sailing Team for two seasons, 2004 and 2005.

His fellow team mates were, among others, Ramón Figueras, Sergi Fuertes, Edgard Valero, Jaume Florez and Judith Vilar.

Jordi Xammar and Joan Herp have won the Olympic trials with just one point over the Canary Islands team formed by Onán Barreiros and Juan Curbelo after the 470 Worlds and Europeans held in San Isidro (Argentina) and S’Arenal (Mallorca).

Joan and Jordi are a very Young team but have been sailing for many years with extraordinary results both in the 420 and 470 Class:

470 World Youth Championship – Gold  (2013-2014)

ISAF World Youth Championship – 470 – Gold (2010-2011)

420 World Championship – Gold (2011)

470 European Youth Championship – Bronze (2010)

470 World Championship – Fourth (2015)

470 World Championship– Seventh (2014)

From Club Nàutic Costa Brava and Club de Vela Palamós we are very proud that a sailor emerged from out club can represent our country at the Olympic Games. The youth squad is producing good sailors and we will surely see more ‘Joanets’ in the future.

Joan, CNCB-CVB and all the Sailing Team we will be following you closely this summer. You will have all the energy, support and encouragement from the Club that has seen you grow u.

Enjoy this unique experience. Best of luck in Rio!
