Talking with sailors Alex Collins and Adrià Morata

27 December 2016

Two sailors from the CN Costa Brava/Vela Palamós Sailing School have participated this year in the 41st edition of the Christmas Race. Alex Collins, sixteen and Adrià Morata fifteen, have sailed in the Europe Class. The two of them were interviewed and an article was published on 19th December in the Diari de Girona.

Why did you choose sailing and not a sport such as football or basketball?
Alex: "Football and basketball have never been of interest to me. I chose sailing because my grandfather has a boat and he has always sailed so I got into sailing since I was a kid ".
Adrià: "I have never liked football or basketball. My parents gave me the possibility of sailing because my father loves the sea”.

What does it means to you to participate in the Christmas Race?
Alex: "For me it is very important because it is a regatta where you can test your level and with such a large fleet it also an opportunity to sail with very good sailors”.
Adrià: "It is something special and a great opportunity as it is not easy to sail in Palamós with so many Europes if it is not at the Christmas Race and the regattas in the surrounding area do not register so many entries".

When did you start sailing?
Alex: "When I was eight and at ten I joined the Club sailing team in the Optimist class".
Adrià: "I have been sailing for six years and two years ago Carles Palomares offered me to join the Optimist sailing team. And this is my first year in the Europe Class Sailing team".

All sports have their idols. Do you have one in sailing?
Alex: "Yes, of course. It’s Ben Ainslie, who sailed the Finn for many years and has won several Olympic medals. At present he is one of the America’s Cup skippers”.
Adrià: "I like a lot Alex Thomson. He sails the IMOCA 60, he participated in the Barcelona World Race and now he is racing at the Vendée Globe".

How are the trainings organised?
Alex: "I do not train during weekdays. I normally sail three weekends in the month".
Adrià: "We go out on the water, the coach lays the marks and we learn the rules at sea ".
